San Partrignano: Puck wins Grand Chasse
Austrian rider Gerfried Puck rode to victory in the third and final class on the second day of San Patrignano’s CSI5*. Puck claimed the top spot ihe Grande Chasse category sponsored by “Fiera di Milano” on Koala di Prelet, a ten year old Selle Francias gelding by Ahorn, by riding clean in 61.38 seconds. In second place Italy’s Gianni Govoni riding Zamar Love Affair, another Selle Francias gelding by Quick Star. Govoni rode a fearless first round, picking up the challenge laid down by his Austrian competitor. What he gained in time, though, he lost in accuracy as he racked up four faults for a knockdown (remember, in this type of class knock downs equal time penalties) and 61.88.
The last rider to enter the arena, American Richard Spooner, risked it all to finish third. His fast round on eleven year old KWPN Pako was faultless but a knock down on the last fence ruined his chances for victory, clocking in at 65,09. The exciting category was a great way to round out a day where the US’s Laura Kraut and Harry Smolders won in the young horse and “winning round” catogories, respectively. For many other riders, like Germany’s Ludger Beerbaum, Dutch team Vincent Voorn, Gerco Schroder and Marc Houtzager Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat, today was a preparation for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
