Dutch rider seals the deal on “Drugs Off” prize
“Drugs Off” is the logo used by San Patrignano in all its prevention activities against drugs and social exclusion. And it is precisely this commitment to keeping young people away from unhealthy lifestyle choices that inspird the last class of the first day of competition in the 12th “Vincenzo Muccioli Challenge”. The class featured fences 1.5 meters in height and was a mixed category with jump off. If the first two classes of the day served to give the riders an idea of the footing, this first “small grand prix” posed a few challenges and made the best riders and horses emerge out of the pack.
Dutch rider Harry Smolder on his Belgian mare Walnut de Muzel was the clear winner. Smolder, currently 36th on the FEI/Rolex worldwide ranking list, is predicted to bea n Olympic favorite. He rode two faultless rounds and a lightening quick jump off time of 39,46. Second and third place went to German riders Markus Ehning and Marco Kutscher. Ehning, eighth in the ranking list and part of the reigning Olympic team, was second with 0/0 and 40,30. His countryman Kutscher (23rd worldwide) rode Cash to a third place finish. Fourth placet and highest of the Italians Giuseppe D’Onofrio on Landzeu 2.
Only 18 of the 46 horse and rider teams competine in the “Drugs Off” prize rode clean in the first round, making it to the jump off. Giulia Martinengo, Italy’s highest ranked female rider (she’s 62nd worldwide) gave her impressions, “The course was technically very difficult, especially for the first day of competition. The fact that so many riders made it to the jump off is proof of how high the level of competition is. I made a small error in the first round and that was enough to leave me out of the jump off” The next event tagged “Drugs Off” is scheduled to be held at San Patrignano next October 11th. Experts, politicians and, aboce all else, young people from far and near will on that occasion convene in San Patrignano to discuss important social issues, includine drug abuse.
